Why I Support the Second Amendment
I support the second amendment because I took an oath to protect and defend the U.S. Constitution and the Maryland Constitution and all of their amendments.
The Declaration of Independence recognizes the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Without the right to Keep and Bear Arms, we the people would have no defense against a tyrannical government. Additionally, without the right to bear arms, we would not have the ability to protect ourselves, our lives, or our property as the Founders so clearly intended.
I have always campaigned with the Second Amendment as one of my core issues. I not only campaign on gun rights issues, but also sponsor the right to carry legislation in Maryland. In 2007 I welcomed the opportunity to meet and collaborate with Dan Reiley (a Democrat) regarding the Right to Carry legislation. Dan urged me to let him sponsor the bill and gather democrat support for the bill. From 2007 until now, Dan and I worked with Delegate Smigiel to do our best to pass right to carry legislation in Maryland. Unfortunately, Dan lost the Democrat primary and as result, I will work closely with Delegate Smigiel and Maryland’s gun community to determine our strategy for the upcoming legislative session.
Constitutionally yours,
Delegate Don Dwyer, Jr.

I find the current trend of politicians to drop the (D) and (R) designation on all of their signs and websites. A person has to actually research who a politician (incumbent) or new to find out what party they represent. I also notice that “who I am” pages are written to read both conservative and liberal. Why are politicians backing away from their party affiliations? Why not just do away with parties then if they both stink so badly. Or is this yet another ploy to pull the wool over voters’ eyes? It is unseemly at best.

Having lived in Maryland for most of my life, I love the state and all that it has to offer. Unfortunately, the basic right of self defense seems to be overlooked in the state of MD. Having worked in law enforcement/security I understand the importance of being the first line of defense for you and your family. The police, as hard as they may work, usually show up to solve the crime, not in time to prevent it. Unfortunately firearms scare many untrained individuals which is why I’m a strong advocate for familiarizing and teaching respect of firearms to everyone. I believe that we should demand rigorous proper training, both dealing with the weapon and situations that may occur, and that only those who can pass the state/federal mandated background checks should be provided a permit.
Through my experience, bad guys don’t buy or carry guns legally, and good people generally don’t commit serious crimes just because they have access to a weapon. Restricting those of us with proper training and backgrounds from carrying a sidearm for defensive purposes allows criminals to not think twice about threatening our lives. When the police show up to the “scene” of a robbery/homicide/attack it’s generally to clean up. Thank you for defending our basic rights.
