Having lived in Maryland for most of my life, I love the state and all that it has to offer. Unfortunately, the basic right of self defense seems to be overlooked in the state of MD. Having worked in law enforcement/security I understand the importance of being the first line of defense for you and your family. The police, as hard as they may work, usually show up to solve the crime, not in time to prevent it. Unfortunately firearms scare many untrained individuals which is why I'm a strong advocate for familiarizing and teaching respect of firearms to everyone. I believe that we should demand rigorous proper training, both dealing with the weapon and situations that may occur, and that only those who can pass the state/federal mandated background checks should be provided a permit.

Through my experience, bad guys don't buy or carry guns legally, and good people generally don't commit serious crimes just because they have access to a weapon. Restricting those of us with proper training and backgrounds from carrying a sidearm for defensive purposes allows criminals to not think twice about threatening our lives. When the police show up to the "scene" of a robbery/homicide/attack it's generally to clean up. Thank you for defending our basic rights.

The right for Same Sex couples to choose who they marry AND be legally recognized for exercising that right is todays Civil Rights movement. At one time African Americans, Jews and Women all faced similar discrimination and persecution.

When those battles were raging on, there were many who were opposed of "recognizing" them as first class citizens. They argued, "the country would never be the same." They used "fear" as a weapon to instill in people that recognizing them as first class citizens would be the wrong thing to do. Afterall, weren't there bigger issues at hand?

Aren't you glad the leaders of that time considered but ultimately did what was right? I thank God they did every day. If they didn't the Senate floor (our city and nation) would look very different than it does today. In fact, many of us who enjoy freedom, may not if it weren't the true leaders of that time.

Recently, the Church has issued the "just say no" campaign against same-sex marriage depicting children as the victims of a law allowing same sex couples to marry. Ridiculous. What they fail to understand is that many of those young people are tomorrows gays and lesbian couples. That is a fact. In time, these men and women will want to choose (legally) who there partner is going to be. And they deserve to be recognized for doing so.

If, as a member of the NY State Senate you vote "no" to recognizing same-sex marriage in New York State, how are you, Senator, going to explain that you excluded them? We owe it to ALL couples the right to choose and be acknowledged for doing so. Religious beliefs or interpretations of such things is no longer an argument for doing what's right.

Choose What's Right...because its the right thing to do.

Thank You.

Marriage is a civil right, not a religious matter. There are protections that a civil marriage offers. Gay people pay taxes like everyone else. You cannot legislate from a Bible. Not everyone is Christian. There are MANY religions in this state, and many people that do NOT follow religions. There are elderly and infertile couples that marry all the time. Would you prevent them from getting married? It's amazing how hateful "religious" people who claim to "love everyone" are. Preventing this law from allowing all to be equal is the wrong thing to do.

Your stance on same-sex marriage is disgusting. This is a CIVIL matter, not a religious matter. There are many people that marry who don't follow religion. There are many couples who marry as elderly people or infertile couples, so your argument of "procreation" is moot.
I don't understand your viciousness and personal vendetta against the gay community. You've never explained yourself as to why you hate gay people so much and want to deny them the rights everyone else has. Gay people pay taxes just as straight people and deserve the same protections and benefits that everyone else has. Your actions are shameful. - This country was founded to give all equal rights (remember that?). You cannot dictate laws under your religion. There are many religions in this state, and many people who don't practice religion. Would you nullify their marriages, too?
- I'm sure you're not going to publish my comment because it opposes your point of view.

Some possible affects:

"What same-sex "marriage" has done to Massachusetts" at: http://www.massresistance.org/docs/marriage/effects_of_ssm.html

"A court ruling has found that Christians who want to provide foster care for needy children must promote homosexuality to them and that there is only a "qualified" right to exercise their Christian beliefs.
The judgment comes in a claim by a Christian couple that their biblical beliefs in opposition to homosexual behavior were being used by the government to discriminate against them regarding their application to be foster parents." at: http://www.wnd.com/?pageId=269573#ixzz1FSrpfifh

"Following the award of damages against Peter and Hazelmary Bulls, who refused to allow a homosexual couple to share a double bed in their guesthouse, another Christian B&B owner is now being taken to court.
Michael Black, and Liberal Democrat councillor John Morgan, are claiming that they were discriminated against under sexual discrimination law after being turned away from a B&B in Cookham, Berkshire on 19 March 2010. They have launched legal proceedings against Susanne Wilkinson, the Christian owner of the B&B, to “make sure that people can't break the sexual discrimination act and get away with it" at: http://www.christianlegalcentre.com/view.php?id=1235

"Lynne Featherstone, the Liberal Democrat Equalities Minister, is expected shortly to outline plans to lift the ban on civil partnerships being conducted in places of worship and to allow such ceremonies to have a religious element. A consultation is likely to be launched on the proposed changes and Ministers will discuss whether civil partnerships formalized in places of worship will officially be called ‘marriages’ under the law." at: http://www.christianlegalcentre.com/view.php?id=1242
