District 31 Anne Arundel County
Battle Lost But not the War
Dear Marriage Supporters:
Thanks so much for your support, your activism and your time over the last month as we battled this issue. I am deeply grateful for your commitment to take action when it was needed, as soon as an alert was sent out from my office.
Unfortunately the vote did not go the way that we expected, though we had been holding firmly to our votes steady throughout the last month and particularly this week. As you know the Governor threw his considerable influence and resources behind this legislation.
Though we did lose this battle, I do not believe that the war is over. While it was not our preference to have to undertake a referendum effort, it is now our next course of action. I hope that I can count on you all, as I have in the past to be the “boots on the ground” as we continue to fight the push to redefine marriage Maryland.
Over the next few weeks as we organize for the referendum you will continue to hear from me. Please stay tuned for information if you want to help.
Constitutionally Yours,
Don Dwyer, Jr.

How can you, as an elected government official, condone blurring the line between government and religion? Our country was founded on the premise that government and religion would remain separate, so as not to infringe on the rights of its citizens, yet we are currently using religious definitions to create a contingent of second class citizens in Maryland. Today was a monumental day in raising those people to the ranks of full citizens with the same afforded rights as their straight brethren, yet you are encouraging the people of Pasadena to fight the decision to strip the minority of their recently won rights. Marriage is not about religion. Marriage is about financial and social protections in our society. It saddens me as a new resident of Pasadena to know that my elected officials are hate-mongers.
Though I do not feel that religious beliefs should factor into this decision, I will leave you with this: even Jesus Christ encouraged his followers to love everyone, rather than hate, and welcome all into the community of believers. It is only when you get into the epistles that you have any mention of hate-speak against homosexuals in the New Testament. As you continue this fight to prevent more than 10% of Maryland citizenry from having their full rights, think to yourself, what would Jesus do?
